Berlin solves housing crisis with new "rapid construction" bill

The law aims to reduce the administrative burden on developers.

About this reported the edition of The Mayor.

On August 20, the Berlin Senate adopted a draft law called the "Accelerated Construction Law". Its aim is to speed up housing construction in the German capital by reducing the administrative work associated with private developers.

This means that planning and approval procedures should be simplified and standardized, deadlines should be introduced, and responsibilities between the state and district levels should be more clearly regulated.

One of the advantages the authorities cite is the acceleration of the issuance of construction permits. Until now, developers had to wait several years before receiving such a permit.

However, the draft law is criticized by opposition politicians. For example, the head of the Pankov district Cordelia Koch believes that the proposed law will not solve these problems at all.

Until now, it was the lack of office staff that slowed down construction projects, not the amount of paperwork per se. District mayors are also unhappy with the concentration of powers the law gives the Berlin Senate to make decisions about housing planning.

The legislative package will now be further debated in the House of Representatives and then finally adopted there.
