On May 10, the NYU ART gallery will host the opening of an exhibition of contemporary photography presenting the book "100 Contemporary Ukrainian Photographers" by the French publishing house Form. Paris.

According to the curators Dmytro Bogachuk and Rayed Bavaye, the exhibition in Kyiv will be the first event in the framework of a world tour that will cover Basel, Paris, Vienna, Arles, New York and other cities.

The war that struck Ukraine two years ago affected all aspects of life, including the visual arts. It flooded the visual space: from social networks to galleries, festivals and even museums. And photography has become not only a document of events, but also a way of expressing the trauma and devastation experienced by our society.

However, the photography that will be presented at the exhibition aims to testify, contextualize, contribute to a different understanding of reality, condemning human injustice and arrogance of beauty and aesthetics. Such conflicts also create a strong need for expression, leading to innovation and unlimited artistic creativity to overcome both the horrors of war and the daily hardships that war creates.

Modern creative Ukrainian photography can become a social refuge in such circumstances, but, above all, it is a way to celebrate the beauty of the world. Photography has two faces: it can be a way of cultural resistance or a tool for building bridges between people.

The exhibition in Kyiv is the first part of the world tour book "100 Modern Ukrainian Photographers" by the French publishing house. The role of Form. Paris as an art institution is about supporting and helping artists to bring their projects to life in sometimes unstable creative conditions.

The book brings together the works of about a hundred contemporary Ukrainian photographers who live in their country or in the diaspora. About 400 images contained in the book form a mosaic, harmonious in its diversity. Most of the works included in the publication will be presented at the exhibition.

"The selection of the works of the photographers selected for this project is based on a double observation: on the one hand, highlighting the visual harmony common to them, and on the other hand, the interaction between these works as a set of strokes. colors on the artist's palette. We had the honor and happiness of collaborating with these artists to create this project," said exhibition curators Dmytro Bogachuk and Raed Bavaye.

The opening of the exhibition will take place May 10 from 18:00 to 20:00.

The exhibition is open from May 11 to 25, 2024.
